"Please tell my parents"
Safe Start? is our programme for preventing sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI). There are about 50 SUDI deaths each year in New Zealand from 60000 live births. While this is down from 250 deaths per year in the 1980's, it is still the main cause of preventable deaths of babies in the first year of life. SUDI is rare for babies whose carers heed the safety advice and high for those who do not. The main findings of research can be summarised as three safety principles: face-up, face clear, smokefree. These safety principles work together to strengthen a child's safety as they sleep.
